Batteries
Wall-mounted, rack and 12 V LiFePO4 batteries for solar, cottages, RVs and marine use.
Blog: 12, 24 or 48 V? →Choosing a LiFePO4 battery
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) has become the standard for solar storage: thousands of cycles, no maintenance, deep discharge without damage and a stable chemistry that is much safer than other lithium-ion batteries.
Three choices matter most: system voltage (12, 24 or 48 V), stored energy in kWh and the format, wall-mounted, 19-inch rack or block. For a new cottage or home system we recommend 48 V; 12 V remains practical for small systems, RVs and boats.
Frequently asked questions
How much battery capacity does a cottage need?
Add up your daily consumption in kWh, then multiply it by the number of sunless days to get through. A LiFePO4 battery can be discharged to 80 or 90% without harm, so a 10 kWh battery provides about 8 to 9 kWh of usable energy. The calculator on the Off-grid page does this for you.
Can a LiFePO4 battery handle the cold?
It discharges fine in cold weather, but most models must not be charged below 0 °C. Install it in a heated or insulated room, protected from frost, or choose a model with built-in heating.
12, 24 or 48 V: which voltage should I choose?
The higher the power, the higher the voltage should be: for the same power, 48 V carries four times less current than 12 V, which reduces cable size, losses and cost. For a cottage or a home, we recommend 48 V.
