Solar charge controllers
MPPT and PWM solar charge controllers.
Choosing a solar charge controller
The charge controller sits between the panels and the batteries. It charges the batteries with the right profile (LiFePO4, AGM, gel) and protects them from overcharging.
An MPPT controller harvests up to 30% more energy from the panels than a PWM controller, especially in cold weather and when panel voltage is well above battery voltage. PWM remains an economical option for a small 12 V system.
Frequently asked questions
What does “150/35” mean on a Victron controller?
The first number is the maximum panel voltage (150 V), the second the maximum charge current to the batteries (35 A). The open-circuit voltage of the panels in series must stay below the first number, even in extreme cold, when it is highest.
What MPPT controller size should I choose?
Divide the panel power by the battery voltage: 1,000 W of panels on 24 V batteries gives about 42 A, so a 50 A controller. Then check the voltage of the panels in series in cold weather.
