Choosing a charger
A charger plugged into the grid or a generator charges the batteries with the right profile: LiFePO4 lithium, AGM, gel or flooded lead-acid. Bluetooth models are set up and monitored from a phone.
A DC-DC charger, such as the Victron Orion, charges an auxiliary battery from a vehicle or boat alternator, without risk to the alternator or the starter battery.
Frequently asked questions
Can a regular charger be used with a LiFePO4 battery?
You need a charger with a lithium profile: a suitable absorption voltage and no equalization charge. Victron chargers have a preset LiFePO4 profile.
Why a DC-DC charger in an RV?
Recent “smart” alternators lower their voltage, and a lithium battery can draw too much current from them. The DC-DC charger limits this current and applies the right charge profile.
