Lightning protection
Long panel runs at a cottage or remote site pick up lightning-induced surges. A surge protector shields charge controllers and inverters, which are costly to replace.
A surge protector does not replace a lightning rod: it diverts to ground the surge induced in the cables by a nearby strike. It only works when connected to a good ground, with a short, direct conductor.
On the panel side (direct current), choose a surge protector designed for photovoltaics, rated above the open-circuit voltage of the panel string in cold weather. On the house side (alternating current), a surge protector at the electrical panel shields the inverter-charger and appliances.
Frequently asked questions
Where should a surge protector go in a solar system?
As close as possible to the device it protects: at the charge controller or inverter input on the panel side, and at the electrical panel on the AC side. With long panel cables, a second surge protector near the panels is recommended.
Which voltage rating for a PV surge protector?
A maximum voltage above the open-circuit voltage of your panel string, corrected for cold: in Quebec, panel voltage rises noticeably in very cold weather. If in doubt, our team checks the choice with you.
Does a surge protector need replacing?
Yes, after a strong surge or when its indicator turns red: it wears out as it absorbs discharges. Cartridge models are replaced without changing the base.
