Inverters
Inverters, inverter/chargers and hybrid inverters.
Choosing an inverter
An inverter turns the batteries’ direct current into 120 V or 120/240 V alternating current. An inverter-charger, such as the Victron MultiPlus or Quattro, also charges the batteries from the grid or a generator and takes over automatically during an outage. A hybrid inverter also includes one or more MPPT solar charge controllers.
It is sized for the power of the appliances that run at the same time, the start-up surge of motors (pumps, compressors) and the battery voltage.
Frequently asked questions
Inverter-charger or hybrid inverter?
An inverter-charger works with separate solar charge controllers: a modular and very robust design, typical of Victron off-grid systems. A hybrid inverter combines the inverter, charger and MPPT controller in a single unit, simpler to install in a grid-connected home.
Do I need 240 V?
Yes if you power a 240 V well pump, a range or a dryer. Two Victron inverters in split phase, or a 120/240 V hybrid inverter, provide 240 V.
What inverter size should I choose?
Add up the power of the appliances that run at the same time and keep a margin for motor start-up surges. An advisor can validate the choice with you.
