Solar panels
Monocrystalline and bifacial panels for rooftops, cottages and off-grid systems.
Choosing solar panels
Monocrystalline panels deliver the best output per square metre. Bifacial panels also capture light from the back: an advantage in Quebec, where snow on the ground reflects light and boosts winter production.
For an off-grid system, the number of panels is calculated for December and January, when days are shortest. A steep tilt helps snow slide off.
Frequently asked questions
How many solar panels does a cottage need?
It depends on your consumption during the months you are there: in December, a panel produces several times less than in July. The calculator on the Off-grid page estimates the number of panels from your appliances; an advisor then validates the result.
Monocrystalline or bifacial?
Bifacial panels are monocrystalline too; they also produce from the back, 5 to 30% more depending on the surface beneath the panel. They are especially worthwhile on ground mounts or raised racks, above the snow.
Does the Hydro-Québec subsidy cover solar panels?
Yes, for a grid-connected system: the LogisVert program pays $1,000 per kW of installed panels, up to 40% of eligible costs. Off-grid systems and batteries are not eligible.
