Frequently asked questions
The questions we hear most often about solar systems for off-grid cottages and sites.
Is snow on the panels a problem?
A snow-covered panel produces little. We plan a steep tilt, which helps snow slide off, and ideally access to clear the panels when needed. Bifacial panels also capture light reflected by the snow. Winter production is still lower: that is why the system is sized for December and January, with a backup generator for a cottage used in winter.
Can the batteries handle the cold?
YiLink LiFePO4 batteries charge between 0 and 55 °C and discharge between −20 and 60 °C. They must therefore be installed in a heated or insulated room, protected from freezing. If your cottage is not heated all the time, let’s talk: where the batteries go is part of the design.
Do I need a backup generator in December and January?
For a cottage used in winter, we recommend one: short days and snow can reduce solar production several days in a row. BE Power BE7500ID (dual-fuel) and BE10500IT (tri-fuel) generators have auto-start terminals: the Victron system can start them when the batteries run low, long enough to recharge them. For a cottage used only in season, we discuss it based on your consumption.
How much maintenance does an off-grid system need?
Very little. LiFePO4 batteries do not need the regular maintenance of lead-acid batteries. Clear the panels of snow when needed and service the generator as recommended by its manufacturer. If the cottage has an Internet connection, the Victron system can also be monitored remotely.
My cottage is hard to reach. How does it work?
Tell us about access: forest road, ATV, snowmobile, boat. We assess delivery and installation with you based on your situation, before sending you a quote.
What warranty covers the system?
YiLink LiFePO4 batteries come with a 10-year manufacturer warranty. Inverter/chargers, charge controllers, panels and generators are covered by their manufacturer’s warranty; ask us for the details for your system.
How much does a cottage solar system cost?
The price depends mostly on your consumption and on winter use. The cottage kits give an estimated equipment price; for a complete price including installation, request a quote: an advisor replies within 48 business hours.
How does the Hydro-Québec solar panel grant work?
Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert program pays $1,000 per kW of panels installed, up to 40% of eligible costs (on average $5,000 to $6,000 for a home). It covers houses, four-season cottages and multiplexes of 19 units or fewer connected to the grid. Panels must be new, CSA certified and installed on or after June 30, 2025; the connection request is made by a master electrician and authorized by Hydro-Québec. Panels, mounting, inverter, wiring and labour are eligible; batteries, taxes, delivery and off-grid systems are not. You apply online through LogisVert once the work is done.
