Backup and auxiliary generators.
In an off-grid solar system, the generator charges the batteries when the sun is not enough, especially in December and January. With automatic start, the inverter-charger starts and stops it based on the batteries’ state of charge.
Dual-fuel (gasoline and propane) and tri-fuel (gasoline, propane and natural gas) models give flexibility for fuel supply, an advantage for a remote cottage.
For a cottage used in winter, we recommend one: short days and snow can reduce solar production several days in a row. In summer, it rarely runs.
The inverter-charger controls the generator through a dry contact: it starts when the batteries drop below a threshold and stops once they are charged, with no intervention.
